Mengo City Lady Stormers came from behind to defeat QC Mbarara 2-1 and clinch the historic inaugural Futsal Women Super Cup on Friday at the Old Kampala Futsal Arena.
The encounter brought together the inaugural Futsal Women Super League champions and the Futsal Women Uganda Cup holders. QC Mbarara had secured their place after winning the league title unbeaten, while Mengo City earned qualification by lifting the Women Uganda Cup in dominant fashion in December.
After an entertaining opening period, neither side managed to break the deadlock as the first half ended goalless.
QC Mbarara eventually found the breakthrough in the 33rd minute when Hadijah Nandago put the league champions ahead, sparking celebrations among the Mbarara-based side.
However, Mengo City’s response was swift. Just a minute later, Nalubwama Shanitah restored parity for the Lady Stormers, setting up a tense finish to the contest.
With the match seemingly headed for extra time, Angel Nakito stepped up to become the heroine for Mengo City, scoring in the 38th minute to complete the comeback and hand her side a 2-1 lead with only two minutes remaining.
QC Mbarara pushed for a late equaliser, but Mengo City’s defence stood firm to preserve their advantage and seal a memorable victory.
The triumph sees Mengo City become the first-ever winners of the Futsal Women Super Cup and adds another trophy to an impressive campaign for the Lady Stormers.
For QC Mbarara, despite the defeat, they can take pride in a remarkable season in which they won the inaugural Futsal Women Super League without tasting defeat and pushed the cup winners all the way in the season-ending showpiece.
