Futsal has officially taken root in Uganda’s secondary school sports calendar following its debut at the ongoing USSSA Ball Games II — and already, the sport is opening doors to the international stage.
Played for the first time in the history of the games, the futsal competition featured six schools competing in a round-robin format. After an exciting series of matches, Mukono Kings High School emerged champions, finishing unbeaten with 13 points from four wins and a draw. Their solid display earned them the gold medal and national recognition as trailblazers in the format.

Kakungulu Memorial School claimed silver, also collecting 10 points but edging out Kyaddondo S.S (10 points as well) thanks to a superior goal difference of +11 — five better than Kyaddondo’s tally. St. Francis S.S Busunju came fourth with six points, while Seroma Christian High School finished fifth with four. St. Mark’s College Namagoma closed the table without a point or draw.
Despite futsal traditionally being played indoors on hard courts, USSSA adapted the format to work on outdoor grass pitches — a creative response to limited infrastructure. The move ensured wide participation while maintaining the fast-paced nature of the sport.

USSSA President Justus Mugisha applauded the effort and innovation shown by both organizers and participating schools.
“This is another significant milestone for USSSA, the Futsal Association, and FUFA,” Mugisha said.
“We’ve officially launched school futsal competitions by including the sport in Ball Games II. Although futsal is typically played indoors on a specialized court, we’ve innovated by taking it outdoors. It speaks volumes about the commitment and creativity of our teachers and coaches.”
The tournament’s success has also come with major reward. Uganda will now have school teams representing the country at the ISF World Schools Futsal Championship in Brazil later this year — a first for the country.
“As a result of this initiative, we now have teams representing Uganda on the global stage. It’s a proud moment for school sport in Uganda,” Mugisha added.
The crowning ceremony for the futsal competition will take place on Friday, 18th July 2025 at the historic King George Memorial Stadium, where champions and standout performers will be honoured.
With this step, Uganda joins the growing list of nations using futsal to promote youth talent, discipline, and international exposure — proving once again that passion and innovation can break barriers, even without the perfect facilities.
